Water damage in the home can come in different forms. Some water damage effects will include rain coming in because of a typhoon. You may have this problem if your roof has not been maintained for decades. Sometimes, a pipe bursts and you find your basement flooded in the morning. Somewhere along the piping, water may have leaked out.
Why are home owners terrified of flooding? After all, water can be life giving, right? Unfortunately, many home owners understand what an inconvenience water damage is. Water may be a nurturing substance, but it can also destroy properties. Properties destroyed, in your case, means your furnishings and even your home itself.
In an odd way, water damage at home can be as debilitating as a tsunami. Of course, the destruction is of lower magnitude in a home environment, but the analogy holds.
What is necessary now is that you understand how you can cope with water damage at home. Prevention is still the best solution. Don’t let your home be unsafe just because you cannot control the water damage.
Here are some ideas.
Fix Leaky Pipes
A faucet continuously dripping water on cement for over a year can lead to weakening of the cement. A pipe may be broken in your basement and you don’t even know it. Fix the problem before it gets worse. The consequence of not acting fast enough is that you may have to destroy a whole floor to control the water damage from the leaky pipe.
Dry Out Damp Surfaces
More alarming is that, in water, molds and moss can grow. How to dry these places? Air out the room. Mold will surely develop if the room is not dry. Water can provide enough nutrients for these mold fungi.
Moss is less of a problem compared to mold. Moss is slippery which makes it a hazard. If the floor is wet, moss will grow.
Install Drainage
When water floods the basement and you have no way of getting it out if there is no drainage. A water resistant basement is a good idea, but you will still have to get the water out somehow. Have a good drainage system in place, and make the whole basement waterproof.
